Up-Cycling Old Running Shirts into a Seat Cover is a video where I show step by step how I made this project. I sweat a LOT when I run, and by the time I get home my towel is usually soaked through. Since I have cloth car seats, that gets pretty gross. I had a box of old running shirts that I wasn’t using, so I decided to turn them into a washable seat cover.
I used about a dozen shirts and cut them into strips. Then the strips were then braided and sewn onto another shirt that was used as the base. The strips were so bulky that it made the sewing a bit fiddly. I also broke a few needles trying to sew through all of it. I added webbing and a buckle so the cover could attach to the headrest. Velcro connects the back and seat sections together so they can be washed separately or placed on two seats.
This is a great example of “messy sewing.” It’s one of those times where precision doesn’t improve the outcome, and eyeballing everything works out just fine. And as always, I strive for transparency, so you’re going to see me literally sweat the small stuff – and the mistakes.
